D, I had to laugh about the bells in your poem. When my Mom got her hosp.bed in ‘93 I ordered a METAL, EXTRA LOUD bell that would wake the dead. ( and probly many neighbors.) That’s not a pleasant way to wake up, so, as my brother and his wife traveled I would beg them to bring back a nice quiet bell. Mom liked the bells but they were "too pretty to use, they might break, and were too quiet"!!! Well, when Mom died (I’d give anything to hear that damn bell again) we were all deciding what to put in the coffin with her. My friend Kenny asked if he could put in the bell. At first I thought he just wanted to get rid of it so I could never use it:o ) But as we all put tokens of love in with Mom, Kenny said "You won’t need this anymore, Lil, go dance some polkas with the Pope. But I’d love to see Sue’s face if you rang it when we visited the grave." I haven’t heard it yet, but last night I fell asleep on the couch and ‘heard’ Mom call me. I yelled back "I’ll be right there , Mom." Kenny, who has water stuck in his ear, thought I was talking to him and yelled back"What"? This woke me up and I ran around saying "My Mom called me, I heard my Moms voice"!!! I was so happy. She called me by one of the silly names she had for me. It was very hard to care for someone 24-7, but Mom was so cool, they were the best years of my life. You are a very good daughter. (Can you get a window air-conditioner for your room)? I hate it so much. My fan runs constantly and I am still too hot. I can’t sleep properly and I leap about in my bed all night. When I go out, the streets are full of yahoos who are clearly enjoying themselves much more than I am. What is wrong with these summer people I ask?! My skin is pasty and white and belongs to the winter. In the summer I look like a melted popsicle. My anxiety flares up to ever higher degrees of madness and my feet get sore every time I go walking. Am I the only one who feels this way each summer? Can anyone else relate to my weirdness? — _TJ_

I relate to your weirdness, TJ. It’s going to get very hot here in Michigan soon, and there’s no AC, but luckily I have a good cross-breeze. I might put the cat in the freezer, and then hold her to my forehead during the really hot days. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. Boy, these summer people are really out in force today. I think we need a good roiling thunderstorm to drive them back indoors and back to the endless re-runs of their favorite serial killer drama, which is what got them through winter, whilst I was living in the lap of non-sweaty luxury. Heat increases my anxiety. So does bitter cold. I suppose I am temperature sensitive – if I get cold or hot, it seems to do a number on my anxiety. I remember one summer – it was 1980, I was pregnant with my second son, and we lived in the upstairs of a big house. Ohio broke record temperatures that year for heat.. and we had no A/C. I just kept a few inches of cool water in the bathtub, and when my older son or I would get uncomfortable, we’d go stand in the tub, and splash water on our legs, arms, necks and faces, even our hair, sometimes.. Do what you can to stay cool.. and maybe save up for a window unit to use on days when it’s that bad. I know Columbus has a program where they give away free window units and fans to people who are below a certain economic level in the summer. Dear TJ, I`m a Winter kind of gal myself I feel physically uncomfortable in the Summer. I don`t like that one bit. Is there anyway for you to get a small air conditioner for your bedroom? Air conditioning makes the Summer more tolerable. Another thing I hate about the Summer is all the bug bites I get. My skin always has bites and feel so itchy. I`m sorry you are struggling right now. It never gets quite as hot as the surface of the sun, but it gets hotter than I like by a long way! It’s 26C today. I think it will top out at 28C some time this week. With luck that’ll be the end of it and maybe the summer will have peaked early here Please pray that it is so or you will have to scrape me up off the road some time in August! — _TJ_

Hi Ian, a quick way of figuring it. Not totally accurate but its close enough -take 26C add 30 =82 and take 1 or 2 from that. I got that from my kids. Canada has not always been metric and I was brought up here on non-metric and though it is mostly used here, things like the temperature on the TV local weather is often stated in celcius and Fahrenheit for the benefit of "older" people like me and many others Same in some grocery stores, which label meat and fish in pounds and grams, though not all stores do that. Ive gotten used to it as we’ve had metric for many years now, but sometimes I convert things in my head from Celcius to Fahrenheit, especially temperatures. I am ok till below 0C and over 37C, then when I feel I must know, I go to this great site I found a few years ago with various metric conversations including temperatures – http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html Toronto, where I live, is extremely hot in the summer most days, often over 95F and very humid. It was 97F for a few days about a week ago but now is around 82F, but that can quickly change at any time. Its also very humid here, so we often have humidity alerts, smog alerts and heat alerts, and it stays this way from around first week in June (though a little earlier this year) and ends in mid September. The climate is hotter here than it used to be and most years is milder winters. Global warming I guess. And to TJ: I hate the summers in my part of the country and stay in my air conditioned apt. a lot of the time. unless when I go to the outdoor pool of my condo building or have to go to the store. Toronto is the same latitude as Northern California. I should be living somewhere else where its not as hot in the summer. I am more suited to a cooler summer climate. It’s exactly the opposite in the US. We get both Fahrenheit and Celsius in our weather reports, but the Celsius is for the younger generation, who may actually see a metric system in this country, if they’re very lucky. We’re amazingly resistent to the metric system, even though a temp like 0F means nothing. We just know that freezing is 32F, and boiling is 212F, and scoff at the rest of the world with their newfangled 0 and 100. "We don’t need a logical system of measurement! We’re still using the duo-decimal system for keeping track of time." (Adopted from the Sumerians, I might add, as if, rather than thinking it’s about time for a change-over after 5000 years, we might as well keep with tradition.) Thank goodness there’s soda pop, which is generally measured in liters. I think we measure blood and soda pop using metric, and that’s about it. Now, sit down and relax a bit. There isn’t any hurry to unpack everything right away. Locate the essentials and unpack them and let the rest slide for a while. You have expended a lot of energy and now need to re-coop and enjoy life a bit. The animals will relax sooner too if you relax a bit. As for the noise, I live in NYC and recommend either a small "white" noise machine or, if you have window air conditioners like I do, leave them running at night – even if only on the "fan" setting. Good Morning Sally, 25 days …. wow!!! sounds like a whirlwind but might be a blessing. Sometimes I find the quicker things happen, the faster I get to calm down. Ahhh, soaking in a bathtub by candlelight, soft music and lavendar incense. A favorite soothing methods of mine. One of the top priorities in finding a new place was that the bathtub had to have a high back. Friends kid me about my home spa / bathroom …. It is amazing how much stuff, I’ve accumulated over the years and I sorted through what I needed/wanted to take with me. The heaviest were books, one of my downfalls, I love to read and have quite an historical selection. Hi Narieka! Welcome to the group! I did most of this move myself too, and I moved out of a 2500 square foot house I’d lived in for a decade. I think I called the haulers 4 times just to take stuff out. I could have given you some dressers. I could have given a FEW people a whole lot of stuff. The baskets sound okay for now. LOL. I’m doing the "box" thing right now. Just about everything I own is in a box or an empty hamper, or big trash bags, etc. I do not know where my toothpaste is. And I don’t know where my towels are, and I want NOTHING more than a hot bath. I usually take showers, but I don’t know where my shower curtain is, LOL. Somebody help me. I know where some dish towels are, and I’m desperate, LOL. I’m going to take a bath and dry off on a dish towel. My house was on the market for 6 months, and it sold, but the guy that bought it wanted to close in one month.. so I had to condo shop, buy it and move out in a month! Actually, I did all of that in 25 days. Well, I’m going to go take that bath, dry off with a dish towel, and go to bed with dirty teeth. I don’t even care, that’s how exhausted I am. My therapist about fell out of her chair when I told her. She wanted to move in with me, LOL. My Realtor is a wizard. Also, she wants me to do some work for her on the side for a little extra $$! Everything seems pretty quiet right now. I do hear some noise, but it’s not bad or anything. I saw my neighbor today, the one I share a patio with, and she’s an older lady. I like that. I have a garage, but it doesn’t separate me from the neighbors, we share walls. Oh man guys.. I’m too tired to write much. The animals were traumatized. My poor kitty. She’s 14 and she’s lived in that OLD house for the last 10 years, and she’s strictly an indoor cat. She’s totally freaked out.. but I have a nice bay window and I hope she’ll discover it eventually and sit in it and watch the birdies. LOL.. both my puppy and kitty "christened my brand new condo with perfectly clean carpet. They both peed on it. Katie, that is one awesome site for the plants. I bookmarked it and I’ll check it out when I’m not so tired that my eyes are crossed. My younger son (who is only staying with me one month and is paying a LOT of rent just to be let in for the month) is so exhausted too. He told me that the ONLY reason I can wake him up is IF I am on fire and IF no one else can put me out, LMAO. I know the feeling. I’m just enjoying sitting right now. Hi Sally, glad you got a nice condo and seem happy with it. Moving is a pain, isn’t it? But it eventually gets done. I always seem to throw out a lot of stuff when I move, and after a while in my new place, I seem to have just as much stuff as before I moved I have a condo in a high rise building. Its very different from living in a house. Good luck in this next part of your life. I saw your photo on the ASAPM photo area, and you look much like I pictured, with a pretty face.You look relaxed. Best of luck.. Mary hey Mary, I am wondering how I’ll feel about a condo. Mine’s not in a high rise.. it’s got it’s own garage and little patio and a place out front to plant flowers. (I’ve never planted anything in my life, LMAO. I water silk ones thinking they are real). I think you will feel just fine about a condo. Your condo sounds like more like what we call a townhouse condo which has an upstairs,downstairs and basement and sometimes a garage? In high rise condos which is a boom here for the past few years, most have balconies, like mine, though my bldg was built about 25 years ago.I have underground parking as all high rise condos here have. I have a high up apt. with a large balcony and plant tomatoes and flowers in summer in big containers. I face south so get lots of sun and heat for tomatoes which like high temps.I would rather have a condo townhouse type like you , but they are a lot more expensive here than a high rise condo and most condos in large cities like here are high rises – accommodates more people. Your condo/townhouse sounds very nice. I love gardening and would love a real little garden. Had one years ago when I had a house. I think I miss the yard and garden the most. . I had to LOL. I probably was relaxed at that time. No doubt the Xanax was at it’s peak then I never thought of that LOL. Well, as long as it helps. Once in a while I take the lowest dose of tranxene if in a very stressful situation, but I always hopeng these kinds of situations won’t come up at all Wishful thinking! You should see a picture of me right about now. I look sort of like that picture of Nick Nolte when he got pulled over for drunken driving, LOL. I’m frazzled and tired. To anxious to really post much. I’ll post when this is over.. Haha. yes, Nick Nolte looked like a fright, didn’t he? He was on a talk show once and they showed him when he had that dreadful photo taken, and he laughed, so good he can laugh about it. The one of Glen Campbell when he got taken in for drunk driving was almost as bad, though not quite. It was said he sang "Rhinestone Cowboy" when he was in jail. Free show? Mary, I took a load of things over this evening, after dark. I was surprised at the noise levels there. I’m not used to that. I figured I would have some of that – because it’s a condo and not a house, but I just hope I feel safe there. It seems like a nice area. Also, I have lived in an area where there are mostly older adults, senior citizens, and they are pretty quiet. This may take some getting used to.. but I just cannot maintain a house, that is way too much work. My front area has a place for some flowers. Its too early to tell what it will be like. You will have to wait and see. You can’t judge by one time. When you have lived in a house for a long time, it takes time to adjust to a different way of living, but you will likely settle in OK though it make take a little while. When you say "noise level" do you mean when you were in the condo you could hear loud noises from people next door or people above. Is your condo like what I said – like what we call a townhouse which are like houses but attached on each side to other townhouses, but are the same as a house, except a house here can be attached to one other house which is called semi-detached or can be a detached house, a house on its own – those are different from high rise condos which can be 20 storeys high all on apts. on top of each other. Maybe houses and townhouses and condos are different in your area. Where are you located? if you don’t want to say thats ok, what state are you in? Also, I have lived in an area where there are mostly older adults, senior citizens, and they are pretty quiet. This may take some getting used to..

Well, depending on the setup of your condo which I don’t know enough about, I don’t know how to respond. In my apt. building (its a condo building, but I just call it apt. building) though apt. building is usually rental of apts. only, but people interchange the two terms. I don’t like a high rise in some ways, though in my building there are people of all nationalities which is common as Toronto is the most multi cultural city in North America – with 51% of the population being first generation immigrants. Many people in my building are seniors and older adults like myself, but there are younger people too. Its quiet in the evenings, but sometimes in the mornings it can be noisy with repairs as I am in an older building or someone is doing renovations. I don’t work and like to stay up late and get up late but sometimes can’t always do that, so sometimes I get ticked off with that and want to move, but I don’t know where I want to move to – so for now, I don’t move anywhere. I live near all conveniences and my mortgage is getting down, so I am not ready to do anything. but I just cannot maintain a house, that is way too much work.

I love gardening, but you don’t have to be a great gardener to plant a few colorful flowers. When we plant flowers here, the flowers at the nursery are labelled as to whether they need a lot of sun or like partly shade or whatever. Depends on which direction your garden is located whether its at the back or front of your house as to what flowers will do well there. Experiment and try different flowers. I think you will feel just fine about a condo. Your condo sounds like more like what we call a townhouse condo which has an upstairs,downstairs and basement and sometimes a garage? In high rise condos which is a boom here for the past few years, most have balconies, like mine, though my bldg was built about 25 years ago.I have underground parking as all high rise condos here have. I have a high up apt. with a large balcony and plant tomatoes and flowers in summer in big containers. I face south so get lots of sun and heat for tomatoes which like high temps.I would rather have a condo townhouse type like you , but they are a lot more expensive here than a high rise condo and most condos in large cities like here are high rises – accommodates more people. Your condo/townhouse sounds very nice. I love gardening and would love a real little garden. Had one years ago when I had a house. I think I miss the yard and garden the most. . I had to LOL. I never thought of that LOL. Well, as long as it helps. Once in a while I take the lowest dose of tranxene if in a very stressful situation, but I always hopeng these kinds of situations won’t come up at all Wishful thinking! The inside of the wooden window sill gets damp and has also developed a little mold. I’ve examined the situation, but don’t see anything I can do other than use the AC sparingly (which is difficult in a city experiencing heat waves in a home that’s like a brick oven). So, one more moisture related wall issue that is stressing me out.

Assuming this is a window unit, the condensation is supposed to run through a small channel to the outside. That channel often gets blocked with dirt and you have your problem. I don’t know how handy you are, but if you can remove the unit and take it outside where there is a hose and a nozzle, remove the front and using the hardest stream of water clean out the bottom real good, hopefully it will open the blockage. I’ve also removed the unit from it’s metal "box" and then can give it a good cleaning on the end that sticks outside also. There may be leaves and all kinds of junk in there. When finished, sit it level and pour some water in the front to see if it finds its way out the proper route. If not, keep spraying, trying to find that little channel and get it cleaned out. Thanks to everyone for your replies and suggestions. Sorry for not replying to everyone individually, but I’m just feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I did check the AC several times. It is tilted properly, but sits in old and deep window sill and I can’t seem to locate where it drains the condensation. Chances are this has been happening all this summer, and the last, but I simply didn’t notice it until a few days ago. The only solution I’ve been able to come up with is using the AC sparingly (I set the temperature a bit higher and try to use only the fan on cooler nights). The room is now in the low 80s F instead of the upper 70s (tolerable if I don’t do much). The sill and wall have not entirely dried, but a notable improvement moisture-wise. Regarding the roof, the house does not have an attic. It’s a century-old, small, two story town house with flat black tar roof (i.e., the brick oven analogy). The roof can only be accessed with a 25-foot ladder and, even if I had such a ladder, I would have trouble with the height right now. I have been trying to phone that agency for help with these home issues, but I keep getting a recording that simply says their message box is full. Seems like the demand is much higher than what they are able to provide. I’ll just have to keep trying and hope I can get through one day soon. The situation is very frustrating. After paying for roof work and a decent AC last year, I’m still getting stressed out over rain and summer heat. Anxiety-wise, this provokes "loss of control" issues. I related a lot to last night’s episode of Monk. Without spoiling the plot, he seemed to be getting over some major fundamental issues when, suddenly, an unexpected stressor stirs everything up again. (moan) Oh well. Arthur, I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time! I know exactly what you mean, because I am exactly the same way. It’s the little things that kill, isn’t it? Any little repair that needs done, or problem that arises with the house, car, etc, freaks me out to the point where I just withdraw and can’t think. I can handle BIG things, like major crises (what IS the plural of crisis?), but those little things get me every single time. I am under almost constant stress because my home is not as clean as it used to be because I have an eight year old daughter who loves to make messes. If the airconditioner is installed at the correct angle and water is still coming onto the sill, I suspect that the drain for the airconditioner might be plugged. The window unit that we had would tend to do this also if the air filter wasn’t clean…I think that it was icing up and melting where it shouldn’t. Money is tight, so I can’t simply hire contractors every time such things happen. I did hear about a city program providing roof and window services for elderly and, I think, disabled people. I managed to jot down the phone number and plan to give them a call.

I’d probably have more respect for them if they could at least explain why they think e-mail was bouncing.

In the control panel, there is a one-line explaination of why it’s bouncing. However, it’s not dated, and I always get the feeling that the problem occurred some time, like maybe days, ago. By the time they shut off my mail, the problem has gone away on it’s own and so isn’t relevent any more. Also, the error message they report doesn’t seem to have any practical real-world meaning, according to my ISP, so it doesn’t help them. I asked them several times for the relevant logs so that I could figure out what the problem was, but on the rare occasions I got a response it was just a canned response that didn’t actuallly answer the question I asked.

I’ve never ever gotten a human response from yahoo, only canned responses or silence. Quite annoying. But so far, having used their groups service for many years, I’ve learned to work their system so it fits the way I like to use it and to just be patient if anything goes wrong.

I listed a ladder because there was no way it could be shipped. I never had luck with ebay on local sale only. I sold the thing in one week. Of course I had to be reasonable on the price, got only 35 bucks. But better than pitching it….I had no more use for it. For some stuff Craigslist can be good, but not when the seller is totally unrealistic about the price. Its not a sucker list.

A lot of it is overpriced but if you’re patient you can find good deals. I recently bought a pair of Klipsch KG4 speakers for $50 and sold them on ebay for $350. Hi i, I bought a very nice framed Miro print with gallery papers for $20. My friend adopted an Italian Greyhound from Craigslist too. I generally use Freecycle though – if you don’t know about Freecycyle check it out www.freecycle.org it’s really a yahoo group so you need a yahoo ID to join but it is free to join, just remember to select "no emails" or "daily digest" or you’ll get constant emails of new postings (you may want that – but just warning you!!). Everything is free, I’ve given away and gotten tons of free great stuff on there! I agree people are selling alot of crap of Craigslist BUT I also see lots of free pianos and decent stuff in the "free" section. I don’t subscribe to it though – i go to the website, maybe you have more flexibility to browse the different sections that way, rather than a list server.

Anyway, I’m a big fan of the "free" section of craigslist. Often people are replacing something that still works fine and don’t want to just throw it out but they don’t want to sell it — they just want someone to come take it away. We got a great set of vertical blinds this way.

I think there’s some confusion over what you mean by "subscribed." Usually when you subscribe to something, you mean that you sign up with some kind of registration process that involves having your subscription managed by the organization providing the service. An RSS feed is broadcast like a web site; it would be like saying you’re subscribing to a radio program. No, you wouldn’t control whatever the Yahoo panel controls. She had 2 cats that needed to be rehomed. They were not a bonded pair, however. So, we went to the funeral and came home with a cat. We werent even sure if Jasper and Luna would work out, since Luna has a history of hating all other cats. We figured we would take Jasper and if he didnt work out with us, we’d take on the responsibility of rehoming him so that the friend of the family could deal with other matters. By the way, when we went to see him the day of the funeral, it took me about 3.2 seconds to say to DH "WE MUST GET HIM OUT OF HERE!!!" He looked so sad sitting on his meowmie’s hospice bed, hoping and praying for her return. Anyway, we fell in love with Jasper. And other than some rotting teeth, he *seemed* to be in good shape. We also didn’t understand at the time that rotting teeth could cause all kinds of other problems, so we did not take care of that right away. This was all last August! (one year anniversary coming up soon!) Within a day or three of having him, we realized that he was blind and deaf as shit! But, he liked to lay on his tummy and have it rubbed, just like a dog. He would knead his paws into the air, making him look like he was swimming. And his purr…what an engine he had!!! Can you tell how enamored we were with him? In February JasperDuds got real sick. He had pancreatitis and stopped eating. He had a fever and was a bit jaundiced. We took him to the emergency vet on a Sunday after a weekend of him declining. He spent the night there and saw a specialist the next day. He had an ultrasound which confirmed the pancreatitis. He was a TERRIBLE patient at the vet. Can you imagine being deaf and blind and swept off in a cage to a strange place where nothing smelled familiar and everyone seemed to be poking and prodding at you, sometimes with needles?! When I went to visit him, there was a sign on his cage: "WILL BITE! MUZZLE MAKES IT WORSE!" I remember thinking to myself "Jasper? Bite?!?! You assholes are putting a MUZZLE on my damn cat!!!" Anyway, to make a long story even longer, he did recuperate and did get to come home to us after 2 nites at the emergency vet and like a jillion dollars spent. Jasper’s triumphant return home! Complete with baby food diet!! After reading so much on RPCHB, I knew how important it was to get Jasper’s mouth cleared up! Finally, at the beginning of June, as soon as school let out and I could be with him (im a teacher!), we set up the dental and J-Duds had 4 teeth pulled. Now, all he has left are his little front fangs (they really are fangs-quite hilarious!) but he seems to be happy as a clam. Friend, I’m glad you got a swamp cooler. Cats here are belly-up on the hardwood floors all day all night. Yesterday it was a new record 101o….can’t wait to see what today hit – they predicted 104o – did you know that? Take it easy…this can’t last forever. How did I know that last summer was a "cooler" one here?

I am glad to have it even though I don’t use it that much. I tend to save it for the really hot times like now. Mostly I depend on fans. But I have lots of trees around my house to cool the air before it hits the house. And the house is an old homestead house with thick solid walls, and high ceilings in the original part. I hope you and your cats can keep cool enough. The forecast I saw shows it cooling by a degree a day for a few days with thundershowers on the weekend. I am so glad I am not in the city with all that pavement and concrete to soak up and reflect heat. — CATherine

My lilacs look pitiful, even aside from the depredations of the leaf-cutter bees. I bet the cottonwoods and elms have lots of thieving roots under my lilacs and flowers. Heh. He came to us named Jasper. We called him that. For a long time. Here is how he got the name Dudley. One of the nicknames I used to call him was "Dude-ly"…he was my little dude, so…"dude-ly". It’s been miserable here in Ohio for weeks, upper 80s and low 90s. We only have the one air conditioner, in "The Cool Room" (aka, the bedroom). Last evening, I had had it, and hid in the Cool Room all evening and night. Apparently, the cats had *all* had it, too. Every single one of them came up, without any urging on my part. He would knead his paws into the air, making him look like he was swimming. And his purr…what an engine he had!!! Can you tell how enamored we were with him? In February JasperDuds got real sick. He had pancreatitis and stopped eating. He had a fever and was a bit jaundiced. We took him to the emergency vet on a Sunday after a weekend of him declining. He spent the night there and saw a specialist the next day. He had an ultrasound which confirmed the pancreatitis. He was a TERRIBLE patient at the vet. Can you imagine being deaf and blind and swept off in a cage to a strange place where nothing smelled familiar and everyone seemed to be poking and prodding at you, sometimes with needles?! When I went to visit him, there was a sign on his cage: "WILL BITE! MUZZLE MAKES IT WORSE!" I remember thinking to myself "Jasper? Bite?!?! You assholes are putting a MUZZLE on my damn cat!!!" Anyway, to make a long story even longer, he did recuperate and did get to come home to us after 2 nites at the emergency vet and like a jillion dollars spent. Jasper’s triumphant return home! Complete with baby food diet!! After reading so much on RPCHB, I knew how important it was to get Jasper’s mouth cleared up! Finally, at the beginning of June, as soon as school let out and I could be with him (im a teacher!), we set up the dental and J-Duds had 4 teeth pulled. Now, all he has left are his little front fangs (they really are fangs-quite hilarious!) but he seems to be happy as a clam. I have a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer that speaks when the outdoor temp goes below freezing. This afternoon it spoke for the first time in months. I was startled at hearing it, thinking it must be broken cause I knew it wasn’t freezing! Since it repeats the message three times, I went close enough to hear what it said. It told me the outdoor temp was 100.7 degrees!! But it was only 84 inside. Yesterday I had seen on the forecast that the temp was going to be in the high 90s for a week; so last evening I had my son get the portable swamp cooler out. So, with today’s temp, it is sitting ready to turn on and cool things down. I only run it a couple hours of an evening to cool things enough so that I can sleep. The humidity meter says 42 inside. Normally, it runs around 50. I bet it is a lot dryer outside. I was watering earlier and the ground was sucking up the water like a sponge. My lilacs look pitiful, even aside from the depredations of the leaf-cutter bees. I bet the cottonwoods and elms have lots of thieving roots under my lilacs and flowers. The cats have been seeking the coolest spots in the house and have finally found the cement floor of the porch is cool even though it has a bit of carpet on it. They lie all stretched out to let the body heat escape with maximum efficiency. Cats seem to have a way of extending the body several inches longer than thye are when standing. Count me on the side of being patient and letting them eventually work things out. I’d have to go back and check my postings to determine just when I first brought Spot and her babies inside out of a storm, but I’m still keeping them in separate rooms when I’m not here to supervise. The only thing I’d suggest that it doesn’t sound like you’re already doing is rotating rooms. My apartment isn’t exactly ideal for integrating newbies – just a small one bedroom apartment. Sometimes LB and Sammy are in the bedroom/bathroom with Spot in the living room/kitchen, sometimes Spot in the bedroom/bathroom and my girls out in the LR. I still have hopes that Sam and Spot may eventually become friendly, but doubt that LB will ever do more than tolerate Spot’s existence. Course she was the same way with Rocky (RB) when I brought him inside, and that was after knowing and getting along with Rocky in the OUT. It was a couple months before she’d stay in the same room with him, but eventually they could be found napping fairly close – though it never got to the point where they’d play or groom each other. Though I’d like to someday see them all cuddled up together, I’ll be satisfied if I can leave them alone in the same room without being afraid of them fighting. Otherwise, I may have to invest in a window air conditioner, since SW Oklahoma does get kind of warm, and the only A/C / heater is in the living room, and it get’s a might warm and stuffy for whoever is locked away in the bedroom during the day. I have all three cats now. My Princess Rita, and my friend’s Spot and Orca(t). So far the other two are locked in the bedroom with food, water, and a litter box, and Rita has the rest of the apartment. Saturday evening they came in, Rita sniffed at their carriers, then they were rushed into the bedroom to relax. It was a rather traumatic move, since they fought very hard to not be caught and carried. To make it worse, Orca(t) remembers me only as That Bad Lady Who Holds Me and Clips My Claws. Spot is just scared of everybody anyway, except mommy. They have food with a drop of Rescue Remedy in it, and the feliway infuser is plugged into the bedroom wall. Last night after I got home, I opened the bedroom door and just left it. Spot is under the bed as far away as he can get, and hasn’t moved. I’m not sure if he’s even eaten yet. Orca(t) is out and about, but only in the bedroom. Rita went into the bedroom and hissed a little, but she jumped on the bed and held a little conversation with Orca(t). I thought they were going to be okay. Then I went to bed. Just as I was dropping off to sleep, I was awakened by a hissspit cat fight under the bed! Spot is VERY angry at Rita, and Orca(t) is defending his brother, so after two of those, I had to lock Rita out of the room for the night. I think Spot is especially nervous because he’s declawed. Orca(t) and Rita would have been all right, but Spot needs extra help. Any suggestions to help them get along better, or am I just going to have to be more patient? After all, it’s only been two days. They have their favorite food, and a couple of items from home with their smell on it, including a comforter under the bed that they used at home, so I’m hoping that they’ll feel more relaxed eventually. When I got there, the seller apologized and said that if he’d seen me coming, he would have passed the player over the gate to me to save me the $1.10 it cost me to come out and meet him on the non-train side. The deal wasn’t contingent on me being able to pick it up, but I appreciated his willingness to work with me. If I were in the market for a similar item, I’d have gone back to him and, yes, I did leave positive feedback first. Part of my former life involved a lot of fund-raising, where I learned the truth of the old aphorism, "if you don’t ask, you don’t get."

How do you handle things like cable problems, telephone line repair, painters, pest control, air conditioner repair, and all of the other things that require a stranger to come to your home? Just recently, I had some chairs that needed to be re-caned. I called a number out of the Yellow Pages and a complete stranger came and picked up my chairs and took them away. She returned in a week – slightly less a stranger – and delivered the chairs. I wasn’t even armed on either occasion, but I do have an attack Cocker Spaniel. She mostly attacks lizards, but she has a very rough tongue and could have done some serious licking damage to the chair lady if the situation arose. You think I’m being funny, here? How is the cable guy, the telephone guy, the air conditioner guy, or the chair lady any different when they are doing their job and when they are eBay Buyers? Is it a Jekyll and Hyde thing? Seriously, I think it depends on what you sell, Ryan. If you’re selling pipe bomb kits, S&M equipment, "Arson for Dummies" books, or fake passports, your hard-ass approach may be good judgement. If you’re selling quilts, or lamp shades, or cane-bottom chairs, your approach may be a little Draconian. You seem to love these hard-and-fast rules. Don’t you ever allow for a judgement call? Like you said, it’s really the kind of thing that should be worked out before the auction ends; aside from the issue of having strangers come to your home, a pickup also means you have to arrange a time and hope he shows up within a reasonable window. Not everyone has that kind of time available to putz around, especially for small-cost items.

Certainly in the UK there are other considerations. My local council has given me permission to work from home. It is conditional on not causing a nuisance for my neighbours. If I start letting too many people drop off/collect items I stand a fairly high chance of having the council withdraw their permission. I would also require public liability insurance. Yes and no. Your refusing to allow pickup is perfectly reasonable. One "hands out your bank details" every time a check is written in the US; perhaps it’s different in the UK. No, I think that if you don’t want people calling at your home that is your choice. I assume you give enough information in your listings for the buyer to have known, before winning, that you live nearby. If so, he/she should have asked before bidding. In any case, he/she should have taken the shipping cost into account when deciding how much he/she wanted to bid. You give out your bank details every time you write a cheque so there’s no problem with that but, as you have already stated, the buyer wants to collect in person so there’s nothing to stop him/her bringing the cash. Very suspect – I would want payment in advance of collection (if you choose to allow collection). I’m building up to a similar problem – no contact from a buyer for seven days. Pulled his details – he lives within a few miles. I’d rather he turned into an NPB than turned into my driveway. So…. our dishwasher died. Kinda. It sprung a leak. Cheaper to get a new one, so we did. Got a great deal through employee discount on a GE discontinued model, about 40% off!!! We were able to get a fancy model for the price of a cheapo one. Bad news, delivery folks won’t install. Called plumber, they came and decided to take advantage of the fact that we had the delivery guy there and offered to uninstall the old one and install the new one for $350. I said, no thank you, I’ll do it myself. So we did. It only took two trips to Lowe’s, I’m very proud of ourselves… Our weekend projects usually require at least 4 trips to the home improvement store to buy supplies… LOL! Anyhow, we have a spanking new dishwasher and the cats had a lot of fun with the box. Since we moved into this house in 2000 we’ve replaced the following: A/C unit, water heater for hot tub, washer, dryer, roof, and now the dishwasher. Got a great deal through employee discount on a GE discontinued model, about 40% off!!! We were able to get a fancy model for the price of a cheapo one. Bad news, delivery folks won’t install. Called plumber, they came and decided to take advantage of the fact that we had the delivery guy there and offered to uninstall the old one and install the new one for $350. I said, no thank you, I’ll do it myself. So we did. It only took two trips to Lowe’s, I’m very proud of ourselves… Our weekend projects usually require at least 4 trips to the home improvement store to buy supplies… LOL! Anyhow, we have a spanking new dishwasher and the cats had a lot of fun with the box. Since we moved into this house in 2000 we’ve replaced the following: A/C unit, water heater for hot tub, washer, dryer, roof, and now the dishwasher. That seems really steep to me, but then again I’ve been living in Thailand for 3 1/2 years… Good deal on the new dishwasher though, it’s always great to get bargains. Our dishwasher died too and has been replaced with a bright new model. Was a bit mean with the cats though – the man who delivered it was given the box to take away and dispose of, ditto with the old washer. The new one makes little noise, unlike the other which sounded something like Niagara Falls. We didn’t need to get ours installed as it is a free standing model and simply has to be attached to a couple of tubes. Bev — The email of the species is more deadly than the mail.

Good grief! A total rip-off. You could have flown Vernon over for cheaper than that & he’d have done it for you I am grateful I have my own personal enginner who can fix anything around the house. But as far as repairs go, I shuddered when I read the roof part (we’re going to need that at some point — we have a shake shingle roof at 30+ years old). Unless they are the overweight, Budweiser-drinking, hair-on-their-backs, can’t-keep-their-pants-from-slipping-in-the-back breed, it would be nice.
