recommend a portable air conditioner ?
Question:
For several years I have used Enviracaire by Honeywell. It is a round unit with a HEPA filter. Mine has a two stage filter. First is a carbon based filter that gets the larger particles and hopefully the gases. It must be chagned every two months or so. The secondary filter gets the smaller particles (down to 0.3 microns I seem to remember). It requires changes only every few years. My unit can be moved from room to room if that is what you want to do. However, I have gradually bought three of them that I leave in place. One for the br, one for the office, and one for the living area. I would recommend getting one, try it out. If it works well for you expand to more as you need them. Whatever you do, get one with HEPA capabilities. good luck, Al

Response:
There are portable air conditioners on the market (I forget the manufacturers) that use a flexible hose for venting. They’re quite expensive and like most window units, don’t do a good job of filtering the air. I think some would agree that the cooler air will help all by itself, but if you’re allergic to airborne substances, the improvement might be minimal. A "good" window air conditioner and a "good" air cleaner (you might need both) might still be cheaper than having an air conditioner and electronic air filter installed on your furnace, but not by much. For your over all health, the purchas a whole house system could be worth the investment.
